Instagram and Facebook ads can put your hotel in front of exactly the people likely to stay with you: people in the cities your guests come from, people who looked at your website last week, people planning a trip for the long weekend. They can also burn money quickly if they send clicks to a slow website or a WhatsApp number nobody answers. This guide covers the campaign types that suit hotels, the audiences, the creative, where to send the click, how to track bookings, and how to budget by season.
Which campaign types work for hotels?
Meta’s Ads Manager organises campaigns by objective. Its current set has six: awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion and sales.[1] For a hotel, three kinds of campaign do most of the work:
| Campaign | Job | Usual objective | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reach your source markets | Make people in the cities your guests come from aware of you | Awareness or traffic | People in those cities, with relevant interests |
| Bring back visitors | Remind people who looked at your website but didn’t book | Sales | Your website visitors |
| Seasonal offers | Sell a package or a season | Sales, or engagement for WhatsApp chats | Source markets and past visitors |
Keep the number of campaigns small. Each one needs enough budget to produce results you can judge, and you need to be able to tell which one is working.
Which audiences should you target?
Start with the people most likely to book:
- Your source cities. Look at your own booking data and list the cities most of your guests come from. A hill resort’s list might be two or three nearby metros; a heritage city hotel’s list might be wider. Target those first.
- Website visitors. A website custom audience is made of people who visited your website or took specific actions on it, collected with the Meta Pixel.[4] Meta lets you keep people in such an audience for a set number of days.[4] These are people who already know you, so they’re usually your best prospects.
- People who engaged with you. People who watched your reels, messaged you or engaged with your Instagram account.
- Past guests, with consent. If guests have agreed to hear from you, you can use your guest list for an audience. Use only data you’re allowed to use for marketing, and keep it secure.
Avoid narrowing too far. A very small audience limits how many people your ads can reach.
What creative works for hotel ads?
Use the same three kinds of hotel content that work on your feed, matched to the campaign:
- For source markets: discovery content about your destination and the experience of staying there. Short vertical video suits reels and stories.
- For website visitors: property content that answers the questions they had: the room, the view, what’s included, the price from.
- For seasonal offers: the package itself, with dates, what’s included and a clear price or “from” price.
Keep it real. Use your own photos and video, show the room as it is, and never invent reviews or guest quotes. If you use a guest’s photo or words, get their permission first. Our guide to Instagram for hotels explains the three kinds of hotel content in more detail.
Where should you send the click?
To one of two places, and both must work before you spend.
A fast booking page. Send people to the page for the room or package in the ad, not your homepage. It should load quickly on a phone, show the price for their dates, and let them pay by UPI. Our 15 fixes for hotel website conversion cover what to check.
A WhatsApp chat. Ads that click to WhatsApp open a chat with you. They suit guests who want to ask before booking: families, groups, longer stays. Meta says that if someone messages you through one of these ads on its Android or iOS app, and you reply within the 24-hour customer service window, that reply isn’t charged and opens a free entry point window that may stay open for up to 7 days, during which Meta doesn’t charge for marketing, utility, authentication or service messages.[5] Check Meta’s pricing page for the current rules. None of this helps if nobody answers, so staff the chat. Our guide to turning WhatsApp enquiries into bookings covers the reply flow.
How do you track bookings from Meta ads?
Set this up before you spend, or you’ll be judging ads on clicks.
- Add the Meta Pixel to your website and booking engine. The pixel is a snippet of code that records actions on your website, which can be tracked as conversions and shown in Ads Manager to measure your ads.[2]
- Add the Conversions API if your booking engine supports it. It connects your marketing data to Meta from your own systems rather than only through the visitor’s browser, and Meta says it can be set up alongside an existing pixel.[3]
- Report the completed booking, with its value. The event you care about is a confirmed booking, not a page view. Ask your booking engine which events it sends.
- Count WhatsApp bookings separately. Note which ad each chat came from and whether it booked.
Then look at cost per booking and booking revenue against ad spend, not clicks or likes. Compare the cost per booking with what the same booking would have cost through an OTA; our OTA commission calculator helps you work that out.
How should you budget by season?
There’s no standard percentage that fits every hotel, so work from your own calendar:
- Before your busy season, spend on reaching your source markets, so people know you when they start planning.
- During the booking window, shift towards retargeting website visitors and promoting the season’s offer.
- In the quiet season, run small, targeted campaigns for the guests who do travel, such as weekenders or long-stay guests, and keep building an audience for next season.
- Around events and long weekends, run short campaigns timed to when your own guests usually book.
Set a monthly budget you’re comfortable with, review results every month, and move money from campaigns with a high cost per booking to those with a low one.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Spending before tracking works. You can’t manage what you can’t see.
- Sending ads to your homepage. Send people to the page that matches the ad.
- Running ads to a WhatsApp number nobody answers.
- Too many small campaigns. Few campaigns, each with one job.
- Judging on likes and clicks. Bookings and cost per booking are what matter.
- Ads that promise what the stay doesn’t deliver. Show the real room and the real price.
What this means for hotel owners
- List your source cities from your own booking data.
- Set up the Meta Pixel and, if possible, the Conversions API on your booking engine.
- Start with two or three campaigns: source markets, website visitors, and one seasonal offer.
- Send every click to a fast booking page or an answered WhatsApp chat.
- Review cost per booking monthly, and compare it with OTA commission.
