Every small hotel wants more direct bookings. Most of the advice stops at “build a nice website”. This guide is the practical version: twelve tactics you can start this month, grouped by where they work, with a 30-day plan at the end.
Why do direct bookings matter beyond saving commission?
Direct bookings save commission, but the bigger prize is the guest. When someone books on your website, you get their name, phone number and email with the booking, and with their consent, the chance to welcome them back next year without paying anyone again.
You also control the conversation before they arrive. You can confirm arrival times, offer an airport pickup and answer questions yourself. That makes for a better stay and, often, a better review.
None of this means walking away from OTAs. They bring travellers who would never find you alone. The aim is to win the bookings you’re closest to: people who already know your name. For the money side, see how to reduce OTA commission.
How do you increase direct bookings? 12 tactics
The tactics fall into five groups: your website, your offers, your speed on WhatsApp, your past guests and your visibility. Start with the website, because every other tactic sends people there.
Website and checkout
1. Show live prices and availability. A guest who has to “enquire” for a price will open an OTA app to check, and often book there. Put dates and real prices on the first screen.
2. Make checkout one page, with no account. Every extra step is a chance to leave. Name, phone, dates, room and payment are enough. Our booking engine buyer’s guide has a full checklist.
3. Put UPI first. UPI is how much of India pays now: NPCI data showed 24.51 billion UPI transactions in August 2026 alone.[1] Offer cards and net banking too, and let guests pay a deposit or pay at the hotel if that suits your business.
4. Make it fast on a phone. Google’s own guidance treats a page’s main content appearing within 2.5 seconds as good.[2] Test your site on your own phone, on mobile data, not office Wi-Fi. If it feels slow to you, it feels slower to a guest on a hill road. The common causes and fixes are in why hotel websites get visitors but no bookings.
Offers
5. Give a book-direct perk. Breakfast included, a guaranteed late checkout, a room upgrade when available, or a welcome drink. Perks give guests a reason to choose your site without changing your room rate. Before you offer a lower price instead, read our explainer on rate parity in India.
6. Offer more flexibility. An easier date change or a more generous cancellation window costs you little and matters a lot to families and couples planning around leave.
7. Sell add-ons at checkout. Airport pickup, early check-in, a birthday cake in the room. Guests like being able to arrange these in one place, and each add-on increases what the booking is worth to you.
WhatsApp and speed
8. Reply within minutes, with a price and a way to pay. Many guests message before they book. If the answer takes an hour, they’ve often booked elsewhere. A fast reply with the price and a payment link turns that enquiry into a direct booking. Our guide to turning WhatsApp enquiries into bookings shows how.
9. Put your WhatsApp number everywhere guests look. On your website, your Instagram bio, your Google listing and your booking confirmations, so a question never needs an OTA.
Past guests
10. Ask for consent at checkout. India’s DPDP Act requires consent to be free, specific and informed, given with a clear affirmative action, and as easy to withdraw as it was to give.[3] In practice: ask, record the answer, and keep offers separate from booking messages.
11. Send a return offer at the right moment. One short, personal message before the guest’s usual travel season, or on the anniversary of their stay, with a direct booking link. Make it feel like a note from the hotel, not a newsletter. Our guide to getting repeat guests has example messages.
Visibility
12. Make sure people who search for you find your site. When someone searches your hotel’s name, your website and Google listing should come up with a clear way to book. Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere, and work on being recommended in AI search. Our guide to AEO for hotels explains how.
What does a 30-day starter plan look like?
You don’t need to do all twelve at once. Here’s a sensible order for a small team.
| Week | Do this | Why first |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Test your own booking on a phone (tactics 1 to 4). Fix the worst problem. | Every other tactic sends people here |
| 2 | Choose one book-direct perk and show it on every room page (5 to 7). | Gives guests a reason to stay on your site |
| 3 | Set a target reply time for WhatsApp and add your number everywhere (8 to 9). | Cheapest bookings you’ll ever win |
| 4 | Start asking for consent at checkout, and plan one return offer (10 to 11). | Builds bookings for next season |
At the end of the month, compare your direct share with the month before. Then pick the next weakest point.
What mistakes should you avoid?
Avoid anything that saves a little today and costs you trust or a contract tomorrow.
- Undercutting OTA rates without reading your contract. The 2022 CCI order removed MakeMyTrip-Goibibo’s parity clauses with respect to other OTAs, not necessarily those about your own website.[4]
- Fake “was” prices. Guests notice, and it undermines every other price you show.
- Messaging past guests without consent. It breaks the trust you’re trying to build, and the DPDP Act expects consent for this kind of use.
- Sending direct guests to an enquiry form. If they can’t book, they’ll go back to the app that lets them.
- Not measuring. Without a starting number, you can’t tell which tactic worked.
How do you know if it’s working?
Track your direct share of room nights every month, alongside commission paid and direct revenue. If direct share rises while occupancy holds, you’re winning bookings rather than losing guests. Put your own numbers into the OTA commission calculator to see what each extra percentage point of direct bookings is worth in a year.
If most of your guests come for short breaks, our guide to weekend getaways and drive-to destinations covers pricing weekends and filling weekdays.
